Thursday 24/08/89
1245 Carlisle to Newcastle and 1514 Newcastle to Carlisle. 47525 had been
hauling three MkIIs on the 1030 from Newcastle, but came off at Carlisle
for an A exam. 26001 was the only engine spare, as it was at Carlisle
for the Fairlie nukex. 37070 ran light from Motherwell to work the 1740
Carlisle to Newcastle!
Friday 25/08/89
1S92 2144 Carstairs to Waverley (portion of the FO 1718 Birmingham International
to Waverley).
Saturday 14/04/90
26001+26005
0500 1Z36 Swindon to Dundee; 1643 1Z36 Dundee to Swindon; from Waverley
to Dundee and Dundee to Markinch. This was a NEDEX, with the Teacups booked
Waverley to Dundee via Cardenden out and back via Kirkcaldy. However,
26005's TM was smoking on the return trip and the train was stopped for
two hours at Markinch for 47822 to come and take over.
Friday 26/07/91
26001 was named 'Eastfield' at ED at 1415. Meanwhile 26007 was being repainted
in Dutch.
Saturday 07/09/91
26001+26002
1010 Waverley to Inverness. 26002 is a last-minute swap for 26003, which
had been on special tests the night before at Eastfield. However, 002
blows up leaving Haymarket with the engine overspeed trip and a multi
fault... and 001 continues to Perth, where both are removed for 37153.
Exit 6LDA!
Thursday 10/10/91
26001 and 26007 are dragged by 26043 from Eastfield to Crewe, arriving
at 1620.
Saturday 12/10/91
26007+26043 1Z16 0700 Hereford to Carlisle; Crewe to Carlisle via the
S&C. This was the load 10 'Wye Knot' tour. The pair put up a good
performance and were only a minute late into Carlisle. 007 and 043 were
removed and returned to Ed later in the day light. 26001 remained at Crewe
as a static exhibit at the Open Day.
Friday 20/03/92
26001 turns out on the inspection saloon, visiting Queen Street, Cowlairs,
Mossend, Larbert, Polmadie and Glasgow Central.
Saturday
25/04/92
Network Northwest Day. 26001+26040 were due to work the 0852 Manchester
Victoria to Barrow and return, but nothing on the day went smoothly!
The farce began with
26001 and 26002 being allocated for the duty and both were assigned special
tests at Eastfield. Five minutes before their departure to Manchester,
002 was failed with its by now customary low power fault. 26040 had arrived
at Eastfield earlier that day with the AT52 ballast trip, so that was
grabbed instead... The pair departed and headed for Newton Heath, Manchester,
with a six hour fester at Carlisle en route.
Almost as soon as
the train departed Manchester Victoria, it was apparent to most on board
that there was a problem with the brakes on the second loco. Unfortunately
the traincrew took another 8 miles to realise and the rain stopped only
because the guard had had the good sense to apply the brake before Bolton.
26001's straight air brake had not been released after tying the locos
on...
At Bolton, 001 was
dumped in the through road and 040 carried on solo. However, it got as
far as Lostock when one of the coaches needed attention to its brakes.
There was a delay of around 40 minutes, and, with 040 suffering from low
power, Preston was finally reached a mere 90 down. The train was caped
and both 26s were back on Eastfield on Monday evening. No apparent problems
were found on 001's bogies.
Friday 21/08/92
26001 and 26007 are rolled out officially in their new as-near-as-possible-to-1958-livery
at Eastfield shed during a short ceremony to mark the closure of the depot.
26001 was the first
loco to be painted, entering Eastfield on 11/06/92. 26001 had a small
West Highland Terrier logo directly above the Eastfield plates; 26007
had a standard size ScotRail blue West Highland Terrier, mounted above
a plaque commemorating D5300 as the last loco to receive major attention
at the depot. The logos and plaque were unveiled by two of the depot's
longest-serving staff, Paul Equi (welder and blacksmith) and Jim Kerr
(painter).
Sunday 23/08/92
26007 (D5300) + 26001 (D5301)
0835 1Z48 Waverley to Oban; 1548 Oban to Waverley. The green machines
had a day out West. Although it began badly: 007 had been left on a battery
charger since Friday at Eastfield and would not start with its frazzled
batteries. Eventually it fired, but the farce had just begun. When the
outward train pulled into Helensburgh Upper, both the driver and fitter
climbed out and, after a ten minute discussion, decided to disconnect
the multi and drive the locos in tandem. Although this had a dramatic
effect on the performance of the locos for the rest of the outward and
return trip, they were still not giving 100%. After the trip, 007 returned
light to Eastfield and 26001 took the ECS to Perth before running to Eastfield.
The next day both were undergoing repairs at Eastfield.
The entire class is
reallocated to Inverness after being transferred on paper three weeks
before. Most light exams were carried out by Ayr, Grangemouth, Millerhill
and Motherwell, with Inverness only doing C, D and Es.

Friday 18/09/92
26001 had been selected to attend Thornaby Open Day, but was failed with
flat batteries, so 26007 went instead.
Thursday 05/11/92
26001 powers the empties for a ScotRail steam excursion, running as 5Z60
from Aberdeen to Perth. 001 then ran light to Portobello for tyre turning.
Friday 11/12/92
26001 returned to traffic following tyre turning and fitting of a brand
new wheelset (for No.3 axle).
Friday
22/01/93
2K22 0625 Glenrothes toWaverley; Clunybridge to Waverley. The DMU failed
and 001 assisted to Waverley.
Wednesday 17/02/93
26001 was used as a route learning loco for Motherwell crews from Motherwell
to Grangemouth. This was to allow them to learn the road for the (reduced)
petroleum duties Motherwell would take over when Grangemouth depot closed
on 03/04/93. Various other 26s also worked on this route learning in the
following weeks.
Wednesday 17/03/93
26001 arrived at Inverness for a B exam and the removal for inspection
of the main air reservoir tanks (because the locos were now so long out
of works). This took three weeks to complete.

2H85 1225 Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh
2H86 1705 Kyle of Lochalsh to Inverness
On the return, problems
were encountered at Stromeferry (No Ferry), and the locos were driven
in tandem to Strathcarron. From there, 26001 wasn't providing any power,
and 26007 was also losing power! Discussions with maintenance at Inverness
helped the traincrew rectify the problems and the train continued.
Thursday
17/06/93
26001+26007 visit the Kyle line again, but with the 7H04 0730 Inverness
to Strathcarron ballast, returning light.
Sunday 20/06/93
26001 was among the exhibits at Maxwell Park station on the Cathcart Circle
for an Open Day.
Wednesday
23/06/93
26001+26007
2H85 1235 Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh
2H86 1705 Kyle of Lochalsh to Inverness
Again there were problems
on the return; in fact, a Class 37 was despatched to Dingwall as a standby.
It wasn't needed, but 2H86 was 40 late back in Inverness. The connecting
2000 sprinter to Glasgow wasn't held...
Most faults with the
pair were down to a faulty brake valve, regulating air leaks, multi faults
and some other electrical problems: all down to the age of the locos and
last, long-distant works dates! 001 also had a recurring speedo problem,
largely down to the way the slow speed equipment had been ripped out at
Eastfield...
